Background of the Study
Local government education authorities play a pivotal role in the administration and funding of primary and secondary education within their jurisdictions in Nigeria. These authorities are responsible for the efficient allocation and utilization of funds intended for the development and operation of educational institutions. In Adamawa State, as in many other states across Nigeria, local government education authorities face various financial challenges, including insufficient funding, inadequate financial management practices, and a lack of financial transparency (Ahmad & Musa, 2023).
The financial practices of these authorities are critical in ensuring that resources are effectively managed for the provision of quality education. Local governments, which receive financial allocations from both the state and federal governments, often struggle with poor budgeting, delayed fund disbursements, and mismanagement of educational funds. These challenges are particularly evident in Adamawa State, where there are significant gaps in educational infrastructure, teacher training, and learning materials (Shamsudeen, 2024).
This study seeks to evaluate the financial practices of local government education authorities in Adamawa State, focusing on how these practices impact the overall development and sustainability of the education system. A thorough assessment will help identify the existing gaps in financial management and offer insights into potential reforms that can strengthen the financial systems within these authorities.
Statement of the Problem
Local government education authorities in Adamawa State have faced persistent challenges in managing educational funds, with significant consequences for the quality of education in the state. Poor financial practices, such as inadequate budgeting, lack of transparency, and delayed disbursements, have resulted in underdeveloped educational infrastructure, inadequate learning resources, and low teacher motivation. These issues negatively affect student outcomes and limit the ability of schools to provide quality education. However, there is limited research on the financial management practices within local government education authorities in Adamawa State, leaving a gap in understanding how these practices impact education delivery. This study intends to bridge that gap by evaluating the financial practices of these authorities and their effects on educational development.
